Powering Stagecoach’s Electrification Strategy
10 %+
Additional savings versus an already-optimised energy contract

Electric buses supported through smart charging and cost optimisation
13 GWh
Of energy managed annually across multiple depots
Challenge
With over 10% of its 8,400-strong bus fleet already electrified, Stagecoach is one of the UK’s most advanced EV fleet operators.
While electrification reduces fuel costs and emissions, rising electricity prices and exposure to volatile energy markets introduced new risks and complexity, particularly across multiple depots with differing infrastructure and load constraints.
Stagecoach needed to:
- Optimise power procurement and charging strategy
- Reduce exposure to market volatility
- Maintain operational readiness across depots
- Unlock additional cost savings without compromising reliability
Solution
VEV delivered an integrated energy optimisation programme designed to lower total cost of ownership (TCO) across Stagecoach’s electric fleet.
Key components included:
- Smart charging schedules via the VEV IQ platform
- Depot infrastructure right-sizing for long-term flexibility and cost control
- Customised power supply models tailored to fleet demand profiles
- Blended risk management strategies balancing hedging with real-time market exposure
- Service-level agreements (SLAs) to ensure fleet readiness every day
www.www.www.vev.combined operational fleet insight with energy market intelligence to align procurement decisions with real-world charging demand.
"With VEV, we’ve found a partner that truly understands both fleet operations and the energy markets. Their intelligent approach to charging and power strategy is helping us run our electric buses more efficiently and more affordably."
Outcome
- Greater than 10% additional savings versus an already-optimised energy contract
- Intelligent load management ensuring lowest-cost charging within operational limits
- Reduced exposure to electricity price volatility
- Guaranteed vehicle readiness across participating depots
The optimisation programme now covers more than 150 electric buses and manages approximately 13 GWh of energy annually — creating a scalable model for future electrification growth.
More than 1 in 5 UK buses charge, operate and cut cost using VEV IQ.
Councils and bus operators are leading the way with the take up of electric vehicles to decarbonise and meet net zero targets. Electric buses improve local air quality and reduce noise pollution, providing a positive impact on local communities.

Building on earlier charging infrastructure partnerships, Stagecoach expanded its collaboration with VEV to include energy procurement and optimisation.
Using VEV IQ, the fleet benefits from dynamic scheduling, intelligent load control and real-time visibility, enabling lower charging costs while maintaining strict operational constraints.
The result is a commercially optimised electrification strategy that strengthens financial resilience while supporting Stagecoach’s long-term transition to zero-emission transport.
