Challenge
As bus electrification accelerated, managing energy across multiple depots introduced new operational and financial complexity. Each site operated with different infrastructure constraints, grid connections and energy contracts.
While electric buses reduced emissions and maintenance costs, rising electricity prices and wholesale market volatility created new financial risk. At the same time, increasing fleet electrification meant growing power demand and greater pressure on depot infrastructure.
Key challenges included:
- Rising electricity costs and exposure to market volatility
- Increasing site load as electrification scaled
- Maintainingvehicle readiness across all depots
- Aligning infrastructure, chargingand procurement strategies with fleet growth
Electrification was progressing — but optimising energy at scale required a more intelligent, integrated approach.
Solution
VEV delivered an integrated smart energy management strategy, aligning charging, procurement and operational data into a single coordinated system.
The solution included:
- Smart charging algorithms to schedule charging during lowest-cost periods while maintaining readiness
- Energy market intelligence integration to mitigate price volatility
- Real-time monitoring platform providing cross-depot visibility
- Operational insights combining fleet and power management data
- And much more, enabling scalable electrification with full energy control
This created a repeatable, scalable model that brought infrastructure, energy and fleet operations into one intelligent control layer.
"VEV understood our environmental and business goals and offered a turnkey solution to support the electrification of our bus fleet. We’re looking at potentially opening-up our charging infrastructure to other fleets and the VEV-IQ platform will be critical to this"
Outcome
- Reduced exposure to wholesale price volatility
- Improved operational control and fleet readiness
- 34,000 kg CO₂ / year
More than 1 in 5 UK buses charge, operate and cut cost using VEV IQ.
Councils and bus operators are leading the way with the take up of electric vehicles to decarbonise and meet net zero targets. Electric buses improve local air quality and reduce noise pollution, providing a positive impact on local communities.
